My wife and I tried May's restaurant after all the glowing reviews and it did not disappoint. The owner (May) is a very sweet woman who clearly takes a lot of pride in her little restaurant and the food she serves. We were lucky enough to come in on a slow night, and got attentive service from May herself, who let us know she comes from a family of restaurateurs (her parents have run a restaurant for 50 years in the Old Quarter, her sister also runs one). We had fresh spring rolls with fish (excellent dipping sauce), roasted eggplant with cheese, and spicy tofu with ground pork. This last dish will be familiar to anyone who has eaten the Chinese dish mapo tofu, as it is a spicy dish based in a tomato broth,w with onions, greens, and just enough spice. We also had two fresh smoothies which were perfectly refreshing. We will definitely be back. It's not street food, it's what I as an American would call Vietnamese soul food - home cooked food. Sure it's more expensive than the bun cha place down the street, but with dishes mainly in the 50k to 100k VND range, your digestive system will thank you for it!
